What issues is the Association currently working on?

Isn’t MACC just another conservation group?

Answer: Yes and no. For example, other groups do monitor legislative topics in Maine and respond to those that matter to the saltwater fishing world. Maine Charterboat Captains, however, make at least a portion of their livelihood from the coastal waters. While our concerns for the waters and the fish might often mirror those of other groups, there are occasions when a "trade association" might earn its keep.

It seems inevitable, for example, that Mainers will be faced with the saltwater license. And our official response to such a revenue source for the State might well match that of another group. But we, as Guides and Captains, need to be sure that the legislature considers our interests as well. We are often the source of the tourist’s access to the fishery. Without our voice the legislature might not consider the wisdom and efficiency of a boat license, for example, whereby the Guide/Captain would purchase a master license that would cover all of his/her clients for the season.

We believe that the Maine Charterboat Captains will find itself bringing to the "trade" and to the fishing professional a vehicle that will be uniquely well-fitted to speaking with the voice of the Captains. [Back to top]

Will MACC speak for me?

We carry in our bylaws this language which we believe separates us from most other organizations: "Votes pertaining to the positions of the Corporation on policies, management or environmental issues that carried with less than a 60% plurality shall also include a minority report or position." The Board of Directors is dedicated to speaking, when appropriate, for the trade and recognizes that unanimity is an ideal not always a reality. The Board is also dedicated to connecting each member to the Board and its proceedings with open meetings and via frequent email polls. [Back to top]

How does being a member benefit my business?

bulletRead the list of member benefits above. Each one has application to our daily work on the water.
bulletYour business has a limited amount of money set aside for marketing. The Association might offer you an opportunity to join with others to rent a booth at a sportsmen’s show that you might not have otherwise been able to afford.
bulletPooling your business with others might bring down the cost of liability insurance.
bulletYour business will have someone in Augusta listening for proposed bills that might impact your customers or your ability to make a living. An article in a newspaper you missed might be caught by another member.
bulletTogether we bring tourist revenue to this fine state. Legislators will listen when we speak as one.
bulletAmong our members will be found experts in nearly every aspect of the trade. You, as a member, will have much more access and another connection.
bulletPick up one spool of PowerPro at a trade discount and you have recovered the dues for the year.
