Isn’t
MACC just another conservation group?
Answer: Yes and no. For example, other groups
do monitor legislative topics in Maine and respond to those that matter to the
saltwater fishing world. Maine Charterboat Captains, however, make at least a
portion of their livelihood from the coastal waters. While our concerns for the
waters and the fish might often mirror those of other groups, there are occasions when a "trade association" might earn
its keep.
It seems inevitable, for example, that Mainers will be
faced with the saltwater license. And our official response to such a revenue
source for the State might well match that of another group. But we, as Guides and
Captains, need to be sure that the legislature considers our interests as well.
We are often the source of the tourist’s access to the fishery. Without our
voice the legislature might not consider the wisdom and efficiency of a boat
license, for example, whereby the Guide/Captain would purchase a master license
that would cover all of his/her clients for the season.
We believe that the Maine Charterboat Captains will
find itself bringing to the "trade" and to the fishing professional a vehicle
that will be uniquely well-fitted to speaking with the voice of the Captains.

Will MACC speak for
me?
We carry in
our bylaws
this language which we believe
separates us from most other organizations: "Votes pertaining to the positions
of the Corporation on policies, management or environmental issues that carried
with less than a 60% plurality shall also include a minority report or
position." The Board of Directors is dedicated to speaking, when appropriate,
for the trade and recognizes that unanimity is an ideal not always a reality.
The Board is also dedicated to connecting each member to the Board and its
proceedings with open meetings and via frequent email polls.
